A Meeting Of Minds or Why Everyone Should Have A Really Big Bust

I left a comment on a blog the other day.  The post was on my favorite topic of monogramming and personalization.   It is often said that the meat of  a blog can be found in the comments and I couldn’t agree more.   A comment left,  in response to mine, by Civility Design reached out and grabbed me. Like minds.  Stylistic soul-mates.  Who were they?

Of course, I had to sleuth them.  Their website let me know my instincts were right.  Don Raney and Jaymes Richardson, the talented,  monogram loving duo behind Civility Design and I were destined to meet.   We like so many of the same things.  The best part?   They are my neighbors.  Not neighbors in the scope of cyber, which could mean anyone living under the same weather pattern, but truly two-blocks-over neighbors.  I shot off an e-mail  and they responded with an invitation to talk about our love of all things personalized.  I knew that this meeting was going to be a good thing.

Now, let me just interject that I have a bust fetish.   A major one.  I do have two antique, carved busts of Romans perched on sconces in my living room but what I really lust after is a great big terracotta bust on a pedestal.  Put a bust of an 18th century Frenchman with a wild wig full of curls and a Gallic nose in my living room and I would never need another thing.  Don and Jaymes employ busts galore to lend a sense of history to their interiors.  That was my first clue.

Second clue?  A fearless love of punchy color and gloss.  I’m feeling those horn chandeliers, too.

But it was doggy love that sealed the deal.  Mavis Astor meet LouLou.

Mavis LouLou

Not pussy-footing around, we selected a place to meet for coffee the very next day.   The Elysian Hotel recently opened a few  blocks away we were all interested in walking over and having a look-see.    From the moment I entered (and was greeted by those amazing busts)  I knew I wouldn’t mind playing Eloise at the Elysian.  Is the casting call for that role still open?   F5CS7882

That afternoon, in a wonderful setting, we laid out  plans for a Civility Design/Queen of Cashmere  media collaboration.  The topic?  Personalization beyond monograms.

Out of the ether of the Internet, real friendships emerge.

Vinaigrette a la Comtesse

In France, set in the beautiful Beaujolais region,  is Chateau de Longsard where the chatelaine just happens to be my sister-in-law.   Alexandra and her husband, Olivier,  run the chateau as a B&B welcoming visitors from around the world.

Longsard

Most nights,  dinner is served “en famille” and if there is a salad, this is most likely the dressing you will find upon the greens.  I have never really measured the ingredients nor do I think Alex would.  We sort of eyeball the proportions.  The ingredients are not fancy and the secret to the dressing is (gasp!) Liquid Maggi.   Do not leave it out.  It’s highly probable that you won’t use it for anything else so your $3.50 bottle will last you a lifetime.

Vinagrette a la Comtesse

In an approximate  proportion of 3:1 combine the oil and vinegar then add the seasonings.  I use a large jar to shake it all up.    As my friend Amy at ABCD Design suggests, before making a final seasoning adjustment always taste the dressing on a leaf of lettuce for an accurate assessment of it’s true flavor.

  • 9 oz -Safflower oil (Light and neutral – olive oil is too heavy.)
  • 3 oz -Cider vinegar (Healthful and tasty.)
  • 1/4 tsp -Dijon mustard (This will emulsify the dressing and help stabilize it.)
  • 3/4  tsp sea salt
  • 3/4 tsp sugar
  • two or three good shakes of Maggi.Maggi Liquid Seasoning

Every so often,  I make a large amount of dressing to have on hand.  Extra ingredients can be added to a small quantity of the mother dressing as needed.   Many things like shallots and garlic will turn bitter if left in the dressing for too long and herbs lose their freshness and zip.

Bon Appetite!

Sweetest Dreams at the Hob Knob

DSC_7492Among the myriad of delightful things that are blog-worthy on Martha’s Vineyard, I discovered the most darling boutique hotel.   The Hob Knob could be featured here for any number of it’s gracious elements.   However, what  really made me smile were the wonderfully original bed linens.

Perfectly crisp and cool, the bedding invites you with promises of only blissful dreams and a restorative night’s sleep.  Cleverly flourished with embroidery of polka dots and personalization, they bid the pampered guest good rest in a series of languages –Good Night, Bonne Nuit, Buona Notte, Boa Noite, Gutten Nacht.

How charming!

A New England Idyll

Red, White and Blue-blood.

As the crow flies, Little Compton is only 4 miles from the mansions of Newport that share the same craggy Rhode Island coastline.  The mindset, however, is a million miles away.

Moss covered stone fences, working farms and glittering ponds make this an authentic and undiscovered New England destination.   Surfboards stand propped up like colorful soldiers along the sides of gray shingled beach houses.  Without a doubt, the local favorite potpourri must be seaweed intermingled with a hefty dose of sea salt.

The summertime population, many of whom can trace thier ancestry to the birth of this country,  doggedly guard and protect  their little paradise.   There is real elegance to be found in this ruggedly romantic destination with it’s perfect Yankee sensibility.  Just keep it a secret.

NRO: Classic Summer Style

Summertime Shopping

Queen of Cashmere trunk shows pop up in only the toniest of  places.

I have just spent a few incredible days in Edgartown, MA at the newest and chicest boutique on the Vineyard.  NRO is owned and run by a charming husband and wife team, Alice and Jason Idelicato.  This little shop sets the new benchmark for fashion retailing on the island.

Ebullient and stylish Alice and Jason, a modern day Mr. Darcy, have managed to attract some impressive lines that were not previously available on Martha’s Vineyard. Of course, one of those spectacular brands is Queen of Cashmere but good company is kept with Tory Burch, Barbour and Eliza Gray handbags and accessories.

The shop, a little gem on North Summer Street set beneath a towering and shady Elm tree, beckons by offering handsome, quality products with a distinctly preppy twist.

Should you be lucky enough to spend some time in Edgartown between May and October stop in to say hello, stay for a glass of champagne and shop for a little while.
